Leeds today: JLS, Lympics, awards, Bubble, choirs, and Mo.

Good morning news fans! It’s Tuesday and that means another dose of goings-on from BGL HQ.

Over on Holt Park Today, they have a lovely article on the Children’s Laureate, Julia Donaldson, visiting Ralph Thoresby High School. The author of The Gruffalo entertained children by both parties bringing her books to life, followed by a Q&A where the children from local primary schools could ask Ms Donaldson about her career.

The first act to be announced that will play at the still-being-built-Leeds-Arena is…JLS. Brilliant. However, they’re the first act to be announced but won’t be the first act to actually play at the venue, due to open in 2013. Right.

The Olympics news rumbles on, not least with Louis Smith being a hot toddy to warm your winter cockles on a Saturday night. But more importantly, Hannah Cockroft, the Paralympian who won two gold medals, has opened a new sports hall at her former college in Halifax. Yeah!

This week the universities and colleges in Leeds are all over helping out new graduates and students: Leeds Trinity University College is running their Employability and Enterprise Week, while over at University of Leeds I’m pleased to announce I’m speaking on a panel at their EXPO 2012 tomorrow. Find out more information here.

Also in education news, Simon Deacon, the Leeds Centre Manager for First Class Learning Maths and English Tuition, has won the Ron Thompson Award. This award is given to someone who has made a big contribution to the network of First Class Learning centres, and of special interest is Simon’s use of social networking in promoting the FCL offering.

Leeds is also in full, comic-book swing thanks to Thought Bubble, which started on Sunday 11th November and ends on the 18th. Check out the full festival programme here.

If you need a little festive spirit injecting into your life, then make sure you pop over to St Margaret’s Church in Horsforth tonight, where the Horsforth Choral Society are performing Bach’s Magnificat along with ‘other musical delights’ from 7.30pm. Lovely.

And finally – plug alert – I have a huge giveaway going on over on my blog to help raise money for Movember. Check it out, yo.

Don’t forget to send us your news, kids, on Twitter, email or in the street. Have a good day!
